The Cape County Republicans sever its ties with Jay Purcell

The Cape County Republican Central Committee has accepted Jay Purcell’s resignation from the party effective immediately. The move comes after Purcell indicated this week he would leave the Republican Party after the election and serve on the county commission as an Independent. Past committee chairman Fritz Sander tells KZIM KSIM based on Purcell’s own words, they don’t feel he embodies the principles of the party any longer. Sander says they are asking voters who fill out a Republican ballot Tuesday to consider one of the other 5 remaining candidates instead. The committee polled 37 of its Cape County members this week, and 34 of them have agreed to accept his resignation. Purcell will still appear on the ballot Tuesday as a Republican. If he loses, Purcell would still keep his 2nd Commissioner seat until 2012. He did not return calls for comment.
